The John Michael Kohler Arts Center, a dynamic 100,000 sq. ft. visual and performing arts complex supports an unusually broad range of artists and ideas in its exhibitions, residency programs, and many other activities. The Arts Center seeks a full-time curator with a breadth of knowledge and significant experience in the field of contemporary art as well as an emphasis on craft-related forms and installation works. This person will develop original thematic and solo exhibitions; write materials for exhibitions and related publications and grants; undertake speaking engagements; and collaborate with other departments; in particular on complimentary programming and marketing. With nearly all exhibitions curated in-house, the Arts Center offers an exciting opportunity to develop and implement a wide range of innovative exhibition projects. The ability to produce excellent, accessible critical writing for catalogues and other interpretive materials is required. Qualified candidates also must have honed public speaking and presentation skills, strong organizational skills, as well as the capacity to collaborate with other curators, staff in other departments, artists, lenders, and volunteers. A master’s degree in art history, American studies, or related field is required along with five years of curatorial experience. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Description:

The Jackie Robinson Museum is seeking a Head Curator responsible for the management of both the exhibition and collection of the museum. The position will oversee the planning, development, implementation and presentation of the Museum’s exhibition program and story. This includes the management and development of the Museum’s collection, special research projects and temporary exhibitions. The Head Curator will also be responsible for the overall management and care of the Museum’s collection.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Formulating the exhibition content;
  • Writing of exhibition script and text;
  • Overseeing research and content development;
  • Identifying potential acquisitions for the collections team in conjunction with the Archivist;
  • Negotiating loan items and funding;
  • Selecting objects from the archive for special exhibition and display.

Additional responsibilities:

  • Planning financial budgets;
  • Supervising staff and/or volunteers;
  • Giving presentations to individuals and groups about the exhibit material;
  • Overseeing day-to-day operations of the organization, which include strategic planning, the collections program, financial management and the hiring and management of staff
  • Demonstrating an understanding of site/program requirements, operating procedures and preservation of collections, artifacts and objects throughout the Museum.
  • Overseeing the development of educational programs that meet the mission and goals of the Museum while serving the needs of the community.
  • Serving as liaison between the Jackie Robinson Museum, the Jackie Robinson Foundation and staff, and the community voluntary groups, the community (including schools, local history and other groups), industry, and grant agencies to secure sponsorship for events, publications and development projects
  • Maintaining and expanding sources of sustainable funding including governmental, corporate sponsorships, grants, planned giving, individual contributions and general fundraising.

The successful candidate must hold a bachelors/masters degree preferred from an accredited institution with a minimum of 5 years museum management experience. Candidates should have a strong background in exhibition development, collections management, communications, community relations, strategic planning, and fundraising.

JOB DUTIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Performs a variety of curatorial museum services including collecting, exhibition, preservation, interpretation and research.

Works under the general supervision of the Museum Director.

Oversees permanent collection of over 10,000 objects with concentrations in early pioneer settlement, trading post era, and oil and gas discovery and boom period.

Responsible for collections growth in accordance with collections policies.

Researches collections and other resources for related programs and exhibits.

Develops exhibit concepts, context and design as necessary.

Coordinates and guides various collection and exhibit committees composed of staff, foundation members, visitors, and citizens.

Responsible for care/conservation of collection including preventative strategies, pest management, and basic conservation procedures.

Drafts and submits for approval policies and procedures related to collection, exhibit, and pest management programs.

Works with Museum Director to establish exhibit schedule, direction, and priorities including in-house traveling, permanent, and temporary exhibits.

Responsible for all exhibit text, brochures, and catalogues for museum system.

Assists in the training of staff and volunteers related to collection and exhibit areas.

Leads staff committee related to exhibit development.

Serves as part of the Museum System upper management staff and may be called upon to oversee other museum system functions.

Supervises collection staff and volunteers in collections care.

Responsible for day-to-day curatorial operations.

Responsible for maintaining budget of program areas.

Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of exhibit design/development and interpretive technologies preferred.
Knowledge and experience in Living History preferred.

Considerable knowledge of professional museum principles and practices.

Knowledge of Embark collections database systems preferred.

Working knowledge of equipment and facilities required in a comprehensive museum setting.

Experience in grant research and writing preferred.

Must be flexible, innovative, self motivated, and have the ability to work independently.

Working knowledge of the principles and practices of office management, work organization, and supervision.

Ability to supervise, train, motivate, and direct museum staff.

Must have excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills.

Must be service oriented and have the ability to organize and meet deadlines.

Must have the ability to interact effectively with all age levels and cultural backgrounds.

Collections Management Intern

The Manassas Museum System in Manassas, Virginia, is offering a summer internship in collections management. The collections reflect the spectrum of Prince William County, Virginia, with an emphasis on the immediate Manassas area. The permanent collection contains over 5,000 objects, approximately 100 cubic feet of archival materials, and special library collections. Collecting priorities have been objects with a local provenance and those that illustrate the intense Civil War activity of the Manassas area. Project Description
The Museum Collection Summer Intern will assist the Curator with various projects related to maintenance of the collection. Duties include cataloging new acquisitions, completion of condition reports and measurements, physical application of numbers onto the objects, photographing objects, housing of material, and entry into the collection database, Past Perfect.

Qualifications

  • First- or second-year graduate student in Museum Studies, emphasis in collections management preferred
  • Computer literacy: Microsoft Office a minimum; Past Perfect helpful
  • Basic photography skills, including use of a digital camera
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently on a large project
  • Attention to detail & neatness
  • Background and interest in history preferred
  • Museum experience a plus

Duration
The internship requires a minimum of 24 hours a week for two months or more (if additional time is required to fulfill for-credit requirements).

We seek an accomplished, innovative, and creative leader with a passion for, and exceptional proficiency in, American Studies, History of Technology, material culture, and/or social history, with comprehensive experience with collections and that can demonstrate the capability to develop new approaches in leveraging and 'mining' collections assets which result in expanded educational and visitor experience opportunities. He or she will have understanding of the professional, ethical, and legal issues of collections, including acquisitions and deaccessions, collection management and care, conservation, registration and archives administration. The ideal candidate must have a work style that reflects positively the values and vision of The Henry Ford and will possess superb communication skills, diplomacy, and thrives in an environment of ambiguity and complexity. As an effective ambassador and advocate for the Historical Resources team, he/she must have demonstrated ability to lead, manage, coach, inspire and develop diverse professional staff.

Collections Assistant

This full time position assists the Collections Manager with artifact management and exhibits preparation. They assist with record keeping, preparing exhibits text and labels, and completing exhibits or object research.  They help compile the annual inventory and maintain the computerized catalog database.  In addition, they perform regular collections maintenance tasks such as cleaning exhibit cases, preserving artifacts, and preparing items for display.

High School Diploma or equivalent, 1 year of previous related work experience and a valid Class “C” Drivers License Required. Knowledge of Texas and Texas Ranger History or History of the American West, coursework, seminars or workshops relating to Collections management, and computer database and word processing skills Desired.  Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, History, Public History, American Studies, Art History or Anthropology or 3 years collections management experience is Preferred.
