POSITION SUMMARY:
The Minneapolis Institute of Arts seeks a dynamic and experienced museum professional to serve as Associate Curator in its Department of Prints and Drawings. The department cares for a growing collection of some 35,000 works of art ranging from the Middle Ages to the present, largely European and American. Hundreds of artists are represented in this encyclopedic collection, many in considerable depth. The collection encompasses prints, drawings, watercolors, pastels, illuminated manuscripts, and printed books.
This position will report to the Curator of Prints and Drawings. The incumbent will enhance the public’s understanding of the collection through exhibitions, rotations, lectures, and publications. The incumbent will cultivate relationships with donors, professional colleagues, partner organizations and the community. The incumbent will actively participate in management, research, and documentation of the collection as well as assist the Curator in the identification and documentation of objects for acquisition.
Requirements: Master’s degree (Ph.D. preferred) in European or American art. Broad knowledge of prints and drawings, including connoisseurship skills and familiarity with research apparatus. Expertise in some significant category of prints and/or drawings. Ability and willingness to work beyond areas of expertise. Proficiency in at least one foreign language (working knowledge of additional languages preferred). Minimum of three years curatorial experience in the field of prints and drawings. Record of research and scholarship, with proven experience organizing exhibitions and producing interpretive materials and publications of high quality. Comfort with public speaking. Evangelical enthusiasm for prints and drawings. Pro-active approach to problem solving. Team player with proven ability to work effectively and positively with staff, trustees, and all other internal and external contacts. Ability to build positive and effective relationships with donors and the broader community.

The National Art Gallery of Singapore (TNAGS) is a new visual arts institution which will contribute to building Singapore as a regional and international hub for the visual arts. The National Art Gallery of Singapore will focus on the display, promotion, research and study of Southeast Asian art including Singapore art in the broader Asian and international context, as well as organise international art exhibitions that will further cross cultural studies in art history of the various regions of the world. Situated in the heart of the Civic District, the City Hall and adjacent former Supreme Court Building will be converted to house this exciting new visual arts venue.
We are hiring senior positions of Curatorial Director in the respective areas of Singapore, Southeast Asia, Asia (particularly in relation to the ink tradition) and International art. These are senior and highly visible curatorial positions at the Institution responsible for all aspects of curatorial, collection and programming developments, including museum operations management in the specific gallery zones of the museum. Reporting to the Director of the National Art Gallery of Singapore, the Curatorial Directors provide vision, direction and oversight for the exhibition, research and collection development of modern and contemporary artworks, represent the institution internationally in the respective areas, also nationally and in the region to build support through donor and sponsor cultivation. The Curatorial Directors also develop partnerships with the artists, arts organisations and the community at large. Playing an active role in the museological planning and knowledge base of the institution, the Curatorial Directors also take lead in the administrative affairs, fiscal management, fundraising and personnel planning of the respective gallery zones.
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
During the developmental stages of the institution, the Curatorial Director will:
- Take a leadership role in the conceptualisation and development of the collection development, curatorial, programming and educational components of the gallery. These would include the conceptualisation of a core curatorial framework of modern and contemporary art history, development of “virtual” exhibition models, review, selection and assembly of works drawn from the institution’s collections and long-term loans, and formulation of innovative ways of interpretation.
- Lead in the development of the gallery’s programme, education and outreach team in planning and implementing programmes targeted at the institution’s audience development objectives.
- Strategise and develop the gallery’s partnerships with international museums, art galleries and artists and curators networks.
- Manage the budgets involved in research exhibitions, programmes, education and publications where necessary.
Following the opening of the National Art Gallery, the Curatorial Directors will function as the keepers of the gallery zones and contribute towards the continued discourse of the art historical scope concerned. The Curatorial Directors have the responsibility for facilitating the development in the scope concerned and to strategise and advance the institution’s presence internationally and locally. The Curatorial Directors will:
- Oversee all aspects of management of day-to-day operations for the specific gallery zones including administrative functions, such as budget planning, project governance and stewardship;
- Engage and establish good relations to work with the museum volunteers on programmes/ exhibitions;
- Supervise museum personnel in the team and handle personnel management functions such as training, motivating and resourcing of the division’s staff while equipping them with the relevant knowledge, skills and capabilities;
- Manage collection development and the creation of cultural capital through collection strategies, budget and resource planning, and network with collectors, artists and donors in Singapore, Southeast Asia and internationally;
- Cultivate and foster major donors, corporate contributors, lenders and collectors with an eye towards long-term partnerships;
- Oversee exhibitions, education and programmes, working with the curatorial, programming and education teams in guiding exhibition and programme planning, development, budgeting and implementation.
JOB HOLDER REQUIREMENTS
The ideal candidate would have curatorial experiences and in-depth knowledge in art history and historiography in the respective areas of collection focuses. He/she should also be knowledgeable in the latest developments in the modern and contemporary art and museum industry. He/she must have postgraduate qualifications in art history/cultural studies/art curatorship or related areas, and have a working knowledge of modern and contemporary art.
The candidate must also have a minimum of 9-10 years experience in curatorial work, curatorial research, exhibition management, and team leadership. The candidate’s intellectual capacity and scholarship must also be demonstrated through publications on art, museum and cultural studies.
The candidate must also possess the linguistic skills to conduct primary source research and have excellent analytical skills. He/she should also have experience in managing large budgets, fundraising, networking with museums, artists and collectors, and be good in interpersonal relations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Works under the general supervision of the Museum Director.
Responsible for the conceptual development, design, construction, installation, and maintenance of all permanent, temporary, and traveling exhibits for the museum system including in a general history, art, and cultural museum as well as a children’s museum, nature center, living history farm and orchard, and historic houses.

Oversees the development and design of all museum exhibitions with concentrations in Native American culture, early pioneer settlement, trading post era and oil and gas discovery and boom periods.
Researches collections, original source material, and publications to develop and write exhibit labels and other interpretive signage/publicity.
Develops exhibit concepts, context and design as necessary utilizing the most up-to-date technology, materials, and equipment possible including but not limited to: touch screen computer interactives, video/projection, audio repeaters, lighting, etc.
Fabricates or oversees fabrication work with outside designers, as assigned to insure quality exhibitions; coordinates with other city entities including: building & maintenance, purchasing, parks and recreation, for fabrication, transportation, exhibit installation assistance, etc.
Leads exhibit committee(s) composed of staff, foundation members, visitors and citizens to develop long-range planning for exhibits, content and concepts for the museum system.
Works with Museum Director to establish exhibit schedule, direction, and priorities including in-house, traveling, permanent and temporary exhibits.
Assists with and designs all visual aspects in the museum system including but not limited to: exhibits, brochures, catalogues, riverrine interpretive signage, directional/informational signage, store merchandise, displays, marketing/advertising displays, visitor information booth, etc.
Assists in the training of staff and volunteers working in exhibit areas and in the museum production/graphics shop.
Maintains a complete inventory of all division tools, exhibits, supplies, and equipment; oversees exhibit shop and maintains exhibit casework and furniture.
Serves as part of the Museum System upper management staff and may be called upon to oversee other Museum System functions.
Works as an administrative staff member to assist with various museum/city wide special events such as Riverfest, Freedom Days, Totah Festival, etc.
Assists with the development of grant proposals and other revenue generating projects.
Assists in all areas of museum operations at any of the museum facilities and in outside special events, openings, programs, and receptions, etc.
In the absence of the Museum Director, will serve as Acting Director.
Responsible for day-to-day curatorial operations in regard to exhibits.
Responsible for maintaining exhibits budget and communicates with purchasing staff in obtaining quotes and/or bids for materials and services needed to complete assigned projects.
Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge and experience in Living History preferred.
Considerable knowledge of professional museum principles and practices.
Knowledge of Embark collections database systems preferred.

Must be flexible, innovative, self motivated and have the ability to work independently.

Atlanta based, Premier Exhibitions, Inc. is a fast-growing publicly traded company (NASDAQ:PRXI) in the business of developing and touring museum-quality exhibitions. Premier Exhibitions seeks to fill the position of Curator of Anatomical Specimens to oversee the collections of plastinated human specimens that form the core of its brand exhibitions: Bodies: The Exhibition and Bodies Revealed. The focus of the exhibitions is to explore the human body, its systems, diseases, and development in order to educate and interest the public about ‘your amazing body.’
The Curator is responsible for the overall care and preservation of the specimens, overseeing the installation and de-installation of specimens in 14 traveling exhibits, maintaining accurate and progressive medical data to ensure accuracy in text and label copy, assessing specimen condition, maintaining collegial relationships with business partners, and interacting with other departments to achieve exhibition goals. The Curator is the lead medical advisor regarding the specimens and will assume levels of public speaking and staff training for diverse audiences. Further, he or she will possess a demonstrated track record of excellence in a team-oriented environment, maintaining a keen ability to thoughtfully convey knowledge, passion, and ideas to others.
The Ideal candidate for this full-time, salaried position will be an extremely organized, proactive, and energetic individual who is willing to relocate to Atlanta, GA.
Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and/or Experience:
Masters Degree or above in the field of Anatomy/Physiology/Forensic Anthropology, Ph.D. preferred
3+ years Supervisory/management
Experience in working with the public
Language Skills:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Composition proficiency
Fluency in a foreign language a plus
Computer Skills:
Advanced Word and Excel skills
Database management
Other Skills and Abilities:
Ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast paced environment
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Extreme detail orientation
Familiarity with museum registration systems
Work Environment:
Collections storage facility, offices, diverse exhibition venues
Frequent standing, bending and walking
Ability to lift 50 pounds, and operate hand tools and small electric tools
Must be willing to travel regularly, sometimes for extended periods, and internationally
