Head of Exhibitions and Loans
Museum of Islamic Art

The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) opened to great acclaim in December 2008. The spectacular building by I. M. Pei houses one of the world’s most distinguished and important collections of Islamic art ranging from Spain to Central Asia and India, dating from the 7th to the 19th centuries, and encompassing arts of all kinds.

The Museum has a dedicated space for temporary exhibitions, where two very successful international shows have already been staged: Beyond Boundaries: Islamic Art Across Cultures in 2008-9, and Pearls in 2010.

The Museum is now seeking a Head of Exhibitions and Loans to develop and manage an ambitious programme of temporary exhibitions and help establish the Museum as a national and international centre for the study and appreciation of Islamic art and to encourage the understanding of Islamic art in the wider context of world culture.

It is envisages that this programme will involve the organisation of exhibitions from outside, as well as the development and touring of MIA–generated exhibitions. The Museum is already in touch with leading museums across the world to negotiate and plan such cooperation.

The post is full-time, based in Doha, and attracts a competitive salary and benefits package.

The Head of Exhibitions and Loans is responsible for the management of all MIA temporary exhibitions and of loans of objects to and from the museum.

Responsibilities include:
  • Management of staff within Exhibition Section, including recruitment and training
  • Development, implementation and monitoring of policy and procedures for exhibitions and loans within the MIA
  • Development of the MIA temporary exhibitions programme, including liaison with museums and other organisations internationally
  • Management of all temporary exhibitions for the MIA – both internal and externally generated
  • Management of overseas touring of MIA exhibitions
  • Management of the process of international loans from and to the MIA, in liaison with the MIA Registrar
  • Responsible, in liaison with other MIA staff, for the movement of all objects which travel internationally
  • Development and maintenance of practice and process for the proper documentation of all exhibitions and loans

Requirements:

  • Degree, post-graduate qualification an advantage
  • 5 years experience in international exhibition management
  • Experience of contract negotiation
  • Experience of budget preparation and management
  • Experience of managing contractors in design, exhibition construction and transport
  • Experience in managing staff in a museum environment
  • Fluency in English; Arabic desirable
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Highly organized
  • An interest in professional development
  • An interest in working in the Middle East, and sensitivity to local cultural issues.

Director of Exhibits
Museum of the Earth at the Paleontological Research Institution
Ithaca, New York, USA

Description: Museum of the Earth (MotE) at the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) seeks an experienced and motivated individual to serve as the head of our Exhibits Department. PRI is located in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. MotE exhibits make accessible the history of life on Earth, the processes by which the Earth system works, and the science by which we understand it.

The ideal candidate will have experience in leading teams, managing projects, and developing natural history and science exhibits. The Director of Exhibits will be responsible for developing and implementing an enhanced strategic vision for exhibits at Museum of the Earth, for overseeing department planning and exhibit-related projects and programs including the future development of the institution’s nascent traveling exhibits program. This position reports to the Associate Director for Outreach and works closely with other institutional personnel, especially outreach, collections, and museum operations staff in a team-centered environment.

Main job responsibilities include:

  • leading all aspects of the exhibits program at the Museum of the Earth, including development, fabrication, installation, and maintanance of permanent exhibits, temporary exhibits, traveling exhibits, and local offsite exhibits
  • supervising an Exhibits Manager and exhibits volunteers, working closely with other PRI staff, and collaborating with scientists and exhibits staff at other organizations
  • budgeting and fundraising for exhibits projects, and scheduling exhibits installations
  • overseeing exhibit evaluation

Requirements: Four year college degree; advanced degree strongly preferred, with strong preference for some background in natural sciences and informal education; 5+ years managing individuals, leading teams, and project management; 3+ years of experience designing and fabricating interactive exhibits for museum audiences; excellent written and oral communication skills and excellent organizational skills; flexibility, willingness to learn new things, and openness to receiving feedback; strong customer service orientation and willingness to provide assistance to others. Strong preference for software technology skills, including Adobe products and databases.

PRI is a fast-paced, non-profit; must be able to work on many projects simultaneously. Must work well in both an individual and team setting. Must be able to be lead and participate in each aspect of exhibit development, from conception through design, fabrication, installation, and maintenance. Irregular hours and periodic travel sometimes necessary.
