POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Internship position with the Custer Battlefield Museum in beautiful Garryowen , Montana , 2010 Internship May-September (flexible).  Responsibilities include assisting the Director, admissions, answering questions and educating tourists in all aspects of the famous Battle of the Little Big Horn, 30-40 hours per week. The museum averages 100+ visitors daily and is open from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Custer Battlefield Museum is a state approved tourist information center.  In addition to answering questions about the Battle of the Little Big Horn, the Little Big Horn Battlefield National Monument, and the Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area, interns should be prepared to answer general questions about well-known national tourist sites:  Yellowstone National Park and Mount Rushmore National Memorial, as well as eastern Montana attractions that include Pompeys Pillar, Pictograph Caves and the Medicine Wheel in Wyoming.  Interns will be answering phones and giving directions.

ORGANIZATION PROFILE:
The Custer Battlefield Museum is located in Garryowen, Montana, "Where the Battle of the Little Big Horn Began".  The museum's mission is to educate the general public on the Western Migration Movement and expansion, and the Battle of the Little Big Horn. This institution also collects, preserves and exhibits original artifacts,  Native American beadwork, photographs, paintings, rare books, and manuscripts related to Custer, the Battle of the Little Big Horn, and other frontier subjects. Extensive exhibits of Native American and 7th Cavalry artifacts include many items excavated on the battle site, as well as ephemera attributed to G.A. Custer, Tom Custer, Crazy Horse, and other historical figures of the time.  

The Collection of more than 100 D.F. Barry period photographs on display has toured internationally and is now on permanent display. The Tomb of the United States Unknown Soldier, dedicated during the 50th anniversary of Custer’s massacre, is a highlight on the museum grounds and is maintained by this institution. During the 125th anniversary of  the Battle of the Little Big Horn a new monument was erected with life size busts of Sioux Chief Sitting Bull and 7th Cavalry General George Custer. Also exhibited is a facsimile of the signatorial rock pictograph attributed to Crazy Horse. The original was destroyed by vandals in 1963 , three miles from this museum .  

The Museum is a non-profit 501c(3) corporation, supported exclusively through private funding. The museum is located on the Historic Site where the Battle of the Little Big Horn began and where Sitting Bull’s camp was attacked by Lt. Col. George A. Custer’s command in 1876.

Internship Opportunity
Anasazi State Park Museum
Boulder, Utah, USA

 
Anasazi State Park Museum is located in Boulder, Utah, a picturesque south-central Utah town, on Scenic Biway 12 between Capital Reef and Bryce Canyon National Parks.  Within the park is one of the largest Ancestral Puebloan villages west of the Colorado River.  The village was occupied from AD 1160 to 1235. Archaeological excavations revealed more than 100 structures which may have housed as many as 200 people.
 
Position Summary: The internship familiarizes interns with projects and duties in all areas of a state park museum.  The interns will spend time in each area of the museum operations: collections management, interpretation, and visitor services. The focus of the internship will be a specific project chosen in either interpretation or collections management. This years (2010) internships will be research relating to the analysis of stone tools found in southeastern Utah. The focus will be to implement typological analysis, functional analysis, and technological analysis of projectile points curated at the Anasazi State Park Museum and affiliated Museums with similar collections.
 
Additionally, the selected interns will facilitate a Lithics Technology Symposium. The Symposium will be held either late August or early September 2010. Featured will be a recent collection (Behunin Collection) of over 1,000 projectile points. The goal of the symposium will be to present and discuss methodological and theoretical issues related to lithic analysis. Attendees will be invited to submit abstracts for twenty-minute presentations. This forum will provide the opportunity for flint knappers and lithics analysts to share methodologies, theoretical frameworks, research questions and approaches with their peers. Participants will be offered the chance to formally present research in a conference setting.
 
Duties may include:  

  • Collections management: Inventory of the museum collection, storage upgrades for museum collection, object photography, environmental and Integrated Pest Management monitoring, cataloging photographs, and organizing museum archives.
  • Interpretation: Develop and conduct interpretive programs, develop written interpretive materials, create a curriculum-based program for school children, develop a new temporary exhibit, plan and organize a special event.
  • Visitor services: Fee and gift shop sales, provide visitors with area information.

Qualifications: Must have completed at least one year of graduate college coursework in museum studies, anthropology, or archaeology. A background in Southwest or Great Basin archaeology is preferred.
 
Employment Period: 10 weeks @ 40 hours per week Flexible dates between May and October.
 
Salary: $75 a week with housing provided.

Planting Fields Foundation’s mission is to preserve and interpret Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park as the premier public garden and Gold Coast estate for today and tomorrow by educating, enriching, and entertaining the visiting public.

Position Description:

  • Assist Curatorial Department with daily operations of Coe Hall Historic House Museum
  • Open and close exhibitions in two museum locations
  • Schedule volunteer docents and receptionists for open shifts
  • Assist with tours and the creation of interpretive materials
  • Assist in the research of upcoming exhibitions, exhibit preparation and development of exhibit text

Position begins June 7, 2010; ends August 14, 2010. This position is full-time, 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm.

Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in a Masters program in art history, public history, historic preservation, museum studies or other related field at an accredited institution.
  • Competent computer skills required. Must be comfortable with MS word, working knowledge of Excel and Photoshop preferred.

Compensation:

  • Paid stipend $10/hour.
  • Room in newly renovated dormitory wing of the historic Hay barn (board not included).
