Historic Mount Vernon seeks a Reference Librarian to assist with the day-to-day operation of the Mount Vernon Library and to support the Librarian in the planning for a proposed Center for the Study of George Washington.  The Mount Vernon Library is a unique resource that supports research into George Washington and the Mount Vernon estate.  The successful candidate will work with the Librarian to develop Mount Vernon’s library collections, utilize the latest technologies to share Library resources, and serve as a principal contact for internal and external researchers, teachers, and interns.

  • Degree in American history or related field required; graduate degree in library or information science from an ALA accredited college or university preferred
  • Familiarity with scholarly methods and resources
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills a must

Registrar/Collections Manager
Holocaust Museum Houston

The Registrar/Collections Manager is a full-time, exempt staff position responsible for the acquisition, organization, care, interpretation and exhibition of the Museum permanent artifact collection. The position manages all aspects of the Museum permanent collection, including registration, cataloging, preservation, conservation and incoming/outgoing loan requests and agreements, and donor contact, and oversees the Museum permanent exhibition, Bearing Witness: A Community Remembers.

This position trains and works closely with volunteers and other Museum staff to implement tactics that serve the membership and the institution's mission and that are guided by its long-range plan.

Principal Responsibilities:
The Registrar/Collections Manager is responsible for administering all collection budgets and supervising department interns and volunteers. In addition, the position maintains and updates collections policies and procedures by working with the Collections Committee, the Director of Changing Exhibits and the Librarian/Archivist.

Registration

  • Manages and supervises collection records by ensuring accurate and consistent cataloging and artifact processing procedures.
  • Working closely with Director of Changing Exhibits and Traveling Exhibits Coordinator, makes loan requests and manages documentation for incoming and outgoing loans
  • Tracks movement of all Museum objects within and outside of the building
  • Creates object condition reports, ensures proper environmental conditions in exhibition and storage spaces, oversees security and insurance of collections
  • Prepares artifacts and exhibits for shipment and negotiates overseas customs brokerage
  • Assists in installation and preparation of changing exhibits

Collections Management

  • Manages and supervises the care, study, and exhibition of the collections by ensuring proper storage, handling, conservation, and exhibition techniques
  • Oversees collection development and cultivation of prospective lenders and donors of objects as well as acquisition funds
  • Oversees permanent exhibition development and interpretation by working to create the context and text, conducting research focused on the collections and selecting, preparing and installing/de-installing artifacts
  • Provides access to the collections by responding to requests from the public, staff, other museums and institutions for information and selecting, preparing, and processing artifacts for loans
  • Interfaces with and educates the Board, volunteers, and staff to develop and maintain an awareness of collections stewardship issues
  • Works to maintain the museum’s collections and collecting policies at the highest professional and ethical standards

General

  • Maintains professional and technical awareness, as well as an awareness of museum trends and laws, by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies

Qualifications and Required Skills:

  • Master’s Degree in history, museum studies, or a related field
  • Background in history, reading knowledge of German, Hebrew or French, and knowledge of Judaica and Holocaust-era artifacts preferred but not required
  • Extensive knowledge of collections handling techniques, as well as AAM-recommended museum practices and ethical standards
  • Two to three years experience in a history museum environment involving collections management and object handling
  • Knowledge of museum cataloging standards and registration techniques
  • Formal coursework or demonstrated practical experience in maintaining records for museum artifacts and/or library special collections materials
  • Formal coursework or demonstrated practical experience in museum exhibit planning, fabrication, installation, and maintenance
  • Formal coursework or demonstrated practical experience in creating and maintaining storage environments for museum and library special collections material
  • Experience using museum collections software, e.g., TMS or PastPerfect
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, including the ability to present information in a variety of formats
  • Ability to keep track of the overall picture while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail in a variety of situations
  • Ability to perform under pressure and work with tight deadlines
  • Ability to work well independently as well as in a team environment
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office products

Research Librarian – Texas Ranger Research Center

The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum seeks a full time research librarian. The TRHFM is the official historical center of the Texas Rangers law enforcement agency. It is operated as an educational department of the City of Waco, Texas in cooperation with the State and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Competitive candidates will be familiar with the museum environment, work effectively with casual visitors and research-oriented clients, and effectively multitask in a changing environment. The Research Librarian reports to the Research Center Director and assumes operational management of the Center in their absence.
 
Major/ Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provide responses to inquiries concerning the service of individuals as Texas Rangers.
  • Render specialized reference and research assistance to students, museum visitors, scholars, writers, media production companies, enthusiasts, etc.
  • Assist in the preparation of bibliographies, articles, and finding guides to the holdings.
  • Assist in the management of book and serials collections and subject files.
  • Perform original and copy cataloguing of book collections and processes assigned archival collections according to departmental procedures.
  • Perform accessions and collections paperwork regarding the library and special collections
  • Serve on the Exhibits Committee to create new and renovated exhibits for the Museum and Hall of Fame.
  • Serve on the Collections Committee to make recommendations on loans and donations to keep the collections focused on the institutional Mission.
  • Provide assistance, as assigned, to projects related to the renovation, development, marketing and overall goals of the institution.

Master's Degree in library science, history, museum studies or related discipline is required (two years of related experience may be substituted for each year of required education). One year of experience in a special or research library/archive is preferred. Familiarity with Texas history and the history of the American West is desirable.
 
This is an exempt full-time position. May be required to work weekend and holiday hours.

Reporting to the Director of Registration and Art Services, the Associate Registrar for Collection Exhibitions is responsible for organizing and supervising the assembly, dispersal and transfer of collection exhibitions presented at the Guggenheim Museum, its global affiliates and outside venues.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position will supervise temporary registrar staff and project interns, as appropriate.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate with the museum’s curators, conservators, and art handlers, as well as commercial fine arts packers and shippers to ensure the safe packing, transport and installation of all works in the museum’s permanent collection.
  • Liaise with staff at SRGM affiliates to ensure that collection works are safely shipped, handled, and installed at all venues.
  • Manage the organization of exhibitions in TMS (The Museum System) database, and participate in TMS and other collection-related working groups.
  • Develop and manage shipping budgets in tandem with the museum’s exhibition management team, track expenses and process related invoices.
  • Travel as a courier with exhibition and outgoing loan shipments, and make courier arrangements for other exhibition team members as necessary.
  • Supervise temporary project staff in organizing the shipping, packing and condition-checking works for exhibitions at the NY museum.
  • Prepare condition reports, receipts, releases, wall lists and other paperwork, as necessary.
  • Oversee and supervise the documentation and archiving of collection exhibitions.
  • Attend staff department meetings, as well as project related implementation meetings.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • A minimum of five years international exhibition registration experience with a major museum.
  • Solid background in modern and contemporary art.
  • B.A. and M.A. in Art History, Museum Studies or the equivalent.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Solid computer skills – experience with TMS system preferred.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
