The Museum seeks to fill the position of Assistant Registrar to help with the proper documentation and management of the Museum’s broad-ranging collection that includes decorative arts, paintings, photography, theater, costumes and textiles. A primary responsibility will concern temporary exhibitions. Other responsibilities involve generating and maintaining electronic and paper records for accessions, condition reports and location tracking for items in the collection, catalogue entries, as well as object handling, transportation and documentation for exhibitions and incoming and outgoing loans. The Assistant Registrar will report to the Chief Registrar.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate all aspects of short and long-term incoming and outgoing object/exhibition loans including electronic tracking, loan forms, contracts, condition reports, invoices for fees, correspondence, scheduling transport, object preparation, packing, and couriering as assigned by the Chief Registrar.
  • Continued oversight of all long-term loans.
  • Update and ensure the ongoing accuracy of electronic records in the collections management database system and assist curatorial staff and the Chief Registrar with cataloguing the collection.
  • Update object location information for both electronic and paper records, including records of all internal and external object moves, as the result of loans, exhibitions, and storage moves.
  • Coordinate and assist with the transportation of objects to and from the Museum’s off-site storage facility, including scheduling of packing and shipments; schedule and provide access to off-site collections for Museum staff, researchers, conservators, photographers, and others.
  • Research and respond to collections inquiries and contribute to reports for the Board or colleagues.
  • Supervise part-time staff, temporary art handling staff, interns and volunteers as assigned by the Chief Registrar.
  • Act as a liaison between the Collections Management Department and all other departments in the Museum, such as Education and Special Events, as required.
  • Assist the Chief Registrar and the Department of Collections Management in other duties as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years experience preferably in a cultural institution
  • BA in Art History; Graduate-level Museum Studies, American History, or Art History preferred.
  • Knowledge of museum standard registration and art handling procedures
  • Knowledge of current national and international art packing and transportation methods conforming to insurance and legal regulations.
  • Experience documenting collections in a collections management database system, experience with ARGUS a plus
  • Excellent computer skills

Atlanta based, Premier Exhibitions, Inc., is a fast-growing publicly traded company (NASDAQ:PRXI) in the business of developing and touring museum-quality exhibitions.  The company is currently seeking a highly qualified Rights & Reproductions (R&R) Registrar familiar with all registration work and has primary responsibility for photography, imaging and rights and reproduction.  The R&R Registrar is part of a collections management team which cares for the Company's collections, works and exhibitions, and shares responsibilities for documentation systems.  Beyond resume' experience, we are looking for a dynamic individual capable of conceptualizing and initiating a system of organization for our large collection of ever-changing images.  Further, he or she will possess a demonstrated track record of excellence in a team-oriented environment; maintain a keen ability to thoughtfully convey knowledge, passion and ideas to others.  Ideal candidate will be an extremely organized, proactive and energetic individual who is willing to relocate to Atlanta, GA.

Duties:

  • Maintain image library (over 20,000 slides, negatives, and photographs)
  • Project lead on digitization of slide library
  • Answers all inquiries from staff, public and website regarding Company's images and videos
  • Serves as collections liaison for database upgrade and digital asset management database
  • Serves as rights and reproductions liaison for outsourced work
  • Coordinates with the graphic and public relations departments in the use of images within the exhibitions
  • Assists in daily maintenance of collections database
  • Daily Operations of the Atlanta storage facility.
  • Cataloging artifacts including basic condition reports, measuring and photography
  • Tracking locations in and within exhibitions using database, organizing artifacts within storage rooms and archiving label copy and information from past, present and future exhibitions.
  • Work may require occasional travel to provide onsite support and supervision at touring exhibition venues.
  • Work with other departments on shared collections duties and assist Curator - Titanic and Bodies with departmental projects, as time allows.

Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in Museum Studies, Museum Science, Art History or related field
  • 2-3 years experience with digital media required; 4-5 years registration experience preferred
  • Proficiency with collections database systems, (FileMaker pro - a plus) Microsoft Office Suite, digital photography and scanning
  • Well-versed in Sequel databases
  • Well-versed in content management systems
  • Solid knowledge of PhotoShop is vital
  • Familiarity with video editing software (Vegas - a plus)
  • Strength and skill in handling, moving and packing fragile artifacts
  • Strong interpersonal, planning and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with strict deadlines
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously.

Successful candidate will manage library and archives facility, as well as information technology systems. Duties include, but are not limited to:

Modern library reference services: maintaining and expanding collection according to library conservation and preservation standards; cataloging (using LCC); providing services to general public, in person and electronically.

Archival services: maintaining collection of rare books, manuscripts, letters, documents, photographs, and maps relating to the life of George Mason and life in colonial Virginia according to archival conservation and preservation standards.

Information technology services: monitoring and coordinating agency IT functions; managing IT systems; maintaining website; using and maintaining library/archival technology applications.

Education/Experience: MLS or MLIS with a minimum of two years experience in a modern reference library. Broad knowledge of information technology, including internet management, required. Knowledge of American history, genealogy, decorative arts, or records management desired. Museum experience preferred.
